City of Pahokee closes City Hall and City Services Due to Eta; Residents Encouraged to Monitor Storm, Possible Flooding

Tropical Storm Eta

As of this writing, the City remains under a Tropical Storm Watch. According to the National Hurricane Center, heavy rainfall will spread into southern Florida. Flash and urban flooding will be possible. Tropical storm conditions are expected by late Sunday along portions of the southeast Florida coast. A Flood Watch remains in effect for our community through Tuesday, per the National Weather Service. Please monitor weather updates.

PREPARE | As a proactive measure, the City’s Public Works Department as cleared roadside litter and landscape debris in areas prone to flooding, cleaned and inspected  storm drains to remedy street flooding and ponding before they occur, and monitoring lake levels. Residents are encouraged to prepare for the possibility of flooding:

Please keep storm drains clean to minimize flooding. Keep debris and yard waste away from storm drains to prevent blockages. Large piles of new vegetation trimming might clog storm drains.

Compost or mulch your yard waste. Do not leave it in the street or sweep it into storm drains or waterways. Collect grass clippings with a lawnmower bag.

Cover piles of dirt or mulch being stored for landscaping projects. These can become mobile during rain events and block drains

Remove sediment and debris from in and around swales. A properly maintained swale protects your home and your neighbor’s home by helping to prevent flooding and stormwater pollution.

Please refrain from doing any major yard work until after a storm has passed.

Do not place any debris at the curb after a tropical storm watch/warning or hurricane watch/warning has been issued and before a storm impacts our community.

Floodwater may contain unseen hazards such as trash, pollutants, broken glass or other debris. Do not enter floodwater, and do not allow children to play in floodwater. Do not drive through floodwater, as it may be deeper than it appears.

Do not park your vehicle in low-lying areas. Vehicles that have come into contact with floodwater should be checked and cleaned.
