City of Pahokee Closes on the Sale of Old Hospital Site

Progress Pahokee

On March 26, 2021  the City of Pahokee successfully closed the sale of the parcel at 200 Barfield Highway  to Oikos Development. Final sales price was $200,000 for the almost 6 acre lot. This monumental sale will make way for new affordable rental apartments in the City of Pahokee. Expectations for mobilization to begin construction could be as early as May 31st, 2021.

While some were skeptical and did not support this venture in Pahokee of creating a host of new rental stock, the development will provide modern and efficient rental apartments to working families, and others alike. Far too long we have been dependent upon aged sub-standard buildings with slumlords to provide adequate living conditions to our residents  whom chosen not to purchase a home or moreover are unable financially to afford a home, yet enjoy the amenities of living by leasing.

This development significantly changes the conversation for the future of Pahokee, while also removing a 30 plus year eyesore from the central part of Pahokee. As we continue to complete our rezoning request  for additional private development of apartments near East Lake Village and McClure (140 Apartments) let’s all pause a moment and appreciate the economic viability seeping into the Pahokee community.

I want to thank  Mayor Babb and all the Commissioners who supported this vision of new affordable housing for Pahokee. We are not done, in a few weeks Barfield Highway Reconstruction ($4.5 Million) along this very same corridor of Pahokee will commence.  Progress Pahokee is forging ahead into the future and with it will come significant economic opportunities for the area and region.
